Image Description
The model for this portrait drawing of the Greek philosopher Aristotle was the printed photograph of a somewhat damaged ancient portrait bust (Roman copy after the original of Lysippus). In the beginning I only traced it. But as it progressed I added more and more details and drew from the head, for example the ear (right), the hair and especially the pupils in the eyes. The antique stone portrait slowly gains vividness.
The drawing is made with pencils (B3 and B5) and erasers (classic, eraser pencil with yellow tip) as well as kneaders) on paper (190 g/m²). It measures 40 x 30 cm.
In the time-lapse video you can see well how the drawing is created piece by piece in several layers. After the preliminary drawing (contours) I put a first hatching with the shadow areas over the sheet, which I then blur with a cloth. From this grey area I then highlight the light areas again with erasers. This procedure: Emphasizing (drawing shadows), blurring, erasing (drawing light) I have described in detail in my book "Realistsich Zeichnen lernen".
The following video shows the painting process as a time-lapsed video.Video with this image
